Instructions:
Report the number of motor vehicles involved in the crash.
Definition:
The total number of motor vehicles (automobiles, single-unit trucks, truck combinations, motorcycles, etc.) that are involved in the crash.
Rationale:
This element provides a count of the number of motor vehicles involved in the crash without having to count the number of motor vehicle records. This simplifies the use of the crash data file for producing reports in which the number of involved motor vehicles is needed.

Accuracy Checks
- If First Harmful Event has a value of ‘collision with motor vehicle in transport’ or ‘collision with parked motor vehicle’, then Number of Vehicles must equal ‘2’ or more.
- If the value recorded for Manner of Collision is ‘single vehicle crash’, then the value recorded for Number of Vehicles should be ‘one’.
- If Sequence of Events includes collision with a motor vehicle either ‘parked’ or ‘in transport’, then there must be at least two vehicle entries in the crash.
